It’s a complicated, high volume delivery business with a wide variety of services, ranging from sameday nationwide deliveries, to niche market technical couriers and film distribution services. Although already equipped with handheld devices, the company needed to gain constant visibility of the location and status of its drivers and riders 100% of the time and its current solution was letting it down, preventing it from giving its customers live tracking.
Ian Oliver, Managing Director at Courier Systems, explained “We needed a device with integrated GPS that was rugged enough to cope with all weather conditions when used on the bikes. Our previous system used a separate Bluetooth GPS device and our drivers were dropping off the radar when the two devices became unpaired.”
The ability to capture a variety of data electronically in the field, such as barcodes, signatures and colour photographs were also important requirements. Courier Systems needed to be able to scan barcodes on the films that it delivers, capture signatures on screen for proof of delivery and take pictures of damaged goods to support its technical courier business. Ryzex recommended the Intermec CN3 as it offered all of the functionality required enabling drivers to carry a single device for all their data capture and communication needs.
Ryzex is supplying Courier Systems with 100 Intermec CN3 mobile computers with integrated GPS, Bluetooth and WiFi (802.11g), GPRS and a 1D barcode scanner. The devices will run NX, the mobile data application developed by DA Systems, Ryzex’s software partner, which meets the specific needs of the transport, logistics and courier markets.
NX runs on the CN3s giving drivers the ability to capture and transmit time and co-ordinate stamped information back to the office over the GPRS network, as well as providing comprehensive driver activity and sensor-based telematics data.
With GPS and satellite navigation functionality built-in, driver status and location will be visible via real time mapping in the control room and on the web for Courier Systems’ clients, who can view the progress of the Courier Systems’ vehicle delivering their consignment.
