Otis, the world's largest manufacturer of lifts, escalators and trav-o-lators® has signed Jade Communications, one of the UK's leading providers of mobile voice and data communications, to supply, maintain and manage Motorola MC70 handheld computers for its UK and Ireland field service engineers.

As part of the contract, Jade Communications will supply 500 Motorola MC70's to Otis to replace and upgrade the mobile computers currently used by its field service operations. Combining the features of a phone, GPS functionality, PDA, computer, scanner and imager, the rugged and compact MC70 handheld is tough enough to withstand the rigours of years in the field.

Otis engineers will use the devices for a wealth of applications including task and route planning, looking up repair information and the availability of spare parts as well as for reporting. The real-time connection via GPRS will enable Otis engineers to make faster fully-informed decisions wherever they are in the field. The system will also enable them to respond more swiftly to urgent customer call-outs and enhance first-time fix-rates.

The deal includes a 5-year Jade Sentinel support contract, application software provided by Pervasic and an O2 airtime contract. Jade will pilot, deploy and host the new application. The MC70s are also being supplied with a full range of accessories including a Brodit holder with a RAM mount and windscreen suction cup. This in-vehicle mount and charging solution is ideal for leased vehicles as no drilling is required. Jade is also supplying single slot communications docks and chargers for home use and Systemslink Two bespoke device holsters.

Otis chose the Motorola MC70 device and Jade support package to enable its engineers to work in real-time with fully reliable long-life equipment that also had scope for further enhancements to the software in the future.

Commenting Bill Heafield, Otis Director Group Systems said: "The mobile device is critical to our vision of delivering first class service to our customers - we wanted a supplier who understood this and would take ownership for ensuring continuity of service to our engineers. Jade has been very flexible and worked with us to improve the functionality and reliability of the mobile service. Its ability to bring together different elements into one package as a total offering has been very beneficial."
